Special Session #1: Innovative Measurement Solutions for Advanced Aerospace Applications with Focus on Unmanned Systems

Description: This session will be dedicated to the presentation of innovative measurement strategies and techniques related to aerospace applications. In particular, novel Guidance, Navigation, and Control solutions as far as original payload configurations will be considered. A specific focus will be set on innovative applications for Unmanned Aerial Systems, such as Sense and Avoid, Cooperative Aerial Navigation, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, Integrated Navigation for GPS-denied operations. Moreover, new physical or virtual sensors and advanced sensor data processing techniques, such as multiple sensor data fusion, will be taken into account.

Special Session #2: Antenna and RCS Measurements

Description: The Special Session is organized by the Italian AMTA (Antenna Measurement Technique Association) Node under the recognition of AMTA, the most prestigious Association on Antenna Measurements worldwide.

The aim of the Session is to cover some of the most relevant topics on Antenna Measurements. Antenna Measurements have today a leading position in Applied Electromagnetics and collect under a unique keyword many different but related areas of interest to Research and Industrial activities.

Some of them are listed below, and represent some (not limited to) topics of the Special Session:

• Theory and applications of measurements of antennas and radar scattering;
• Advances in indoor and outdoor test ranges;
• Measurement standards and laboratory comparisons;
• Advances in near-field, far-field, compact and RCS range measurement techniques;
• New instrumentation for testing, data acquisition and processing;
• Diagnostic methods for antenna acceptance testing;
• GNSS, PCS, cellular, satellite, and automotive antennas and measurements;
• Numerical methods related to EM measurements;
• RFID characterization;
• Wearable antenna designs and measurements;
• Multi-link MIMO and cooperative channels testing;
• In-situ testing and channel sounding.

Special Session #3: Toward IoT and Beyond: Measurement and Networking for Internet of Everything

Description: This Special Session aims at focusing a scientific discussion about experimenting ideas and technologies of Measurement and Networking for fostering the passage from Internet of Things (IoT) to Internet of Everything (IoE). Whereas in IoT only electronic devices take advantage of the network to communicate and exchange data exclusively, IoE provides an integrated interconnection of people, processes devices (smartphones, tablets, smartwatch, fitness tracker and wearale device in general, smart televisions, appliances and more), and data. Underlying all you will find an intelligent network, able to listen, learn and respond to offer new services and capabilities that will ensure greater security, simplicity and reliability in various fields. Thus, guests of the Session will be all the innovative ideas and technologies related to general issues of measurement challenges arising from IoT networking, and application problems, for developing computer-based IoT applications, or exploiting the network technologies to increase the efficiency of industrial processes in terms of cost, productivity, optimization of maintenance. Special attention will be paid to issues related to diagnostics, such as sensor faults and anomaly and intrusion detection. The discussion is extended also to some application topics becoming more and more hot, such as "IoT for civil and industrial applications", up to to encompass various areas such as: "IoT for smart city", "IoT for industrial manufacturing", "IoT as enabling technologies for Industry 4.0." Furthermore, in this research area, a number of working groups of the IEEE (also sponsored by IMS and IES) is springing, by attempting to define standards for data sharing, interoperability, and security of messages over the network. Finally, last but not least, another area receiving more and more attention is "Standardization activity for IoT".

Special Session #4: Advanced solutions for Energy Harvesting

Description: Nowadays small and smart sensors are very well distributed in many environments of our everyday life. Many of such sensors or sensor nodes have to be autonomous both as a choice or needs coming from hostile environments which affect the possibility to replace batteries. Within this announced framework, requirements for on site energy harvesting becomes mandatory, especially if the scenario involves embedded systems and wireless sensor networks. Numerous sources of energy can be exploited to perform efficient energy harvesting, by using wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, thermoelectric generators and mechanical vibration devices e.g. piezoelectric, electrostatic and electromagnetic devices.

Anyway, the task of collecting energy is almost challenging in terms of the conversion and extraction mechanisms. Recently, the exploitation of nonlinear dynamics is under investigation to improve the performance of the devices in case the energy to be collected is distributed over a wide range of frequency.

Submissions are welcome (but not limited):
• Transducers for energy scavenging
• Linear and Nonlinear mechanisms and techniques
• Emerging technologies and methods for energy harvesting
• Power management and interfaces
• Models and simulations in energy harvesters
• Self-powered sensors and autonomous sensors

Special Session #5: Resilient software and Internet Services (RISE)

Description: Research in the areas of resilient Internet architectures and technologies, including resilient cloud infrastructures and software services, and service oriented architectures, has been steadily increasing in the last years. This is a challenging theme, especially when considering that cyber physical systems are very heterogeneous, complex, and highly dynamic. In addition, these systems are characterized by demanding quality attributes, as they are being deployed many times to support business, or mission-critical operations. The development and deployment of resilient cyber physical systems (i.e., systems that are able to deliver service that can justifiably be trusted in the presence of changes), involves overcoming many difficult challenges and implies fulfilling several key quality attributes (e.g., robustness, interoperability, security). Techniques for design, development, and deployment, but also techniques for verification and validation of these systems, including measurement-based techniques, are among the crucial aspects to be addressed. Thus, the goal of this Special Session is to promote the discussion on challenges, solutions, and research trends, in the broad and emergent area of resilience for software and Internet services.
